A diferença entre Say, Tell, Speak e Talk

Muitos estudantes de inglês se confundem com os verbos say, tell, speak e talk. Todos falam de “usar palavras”, mas não são usados da mesma forma. Este guia analisa cada verbo, mostra padrões de frases típicos e destaca os erros mais comuns para você evitar.

1. Visão geral rápida

Aqui vai uma forma simples de lembrar a ideia central de cada verbo:

• say: foca em quais palavras são ditas
• tell: foca em quem recebe a informação
• speak: é mais formal e costuma ser usado para idiomas e discursos formais
• talk: é mais informal e usado para conversa e discussão

Um pequeno “lembrete” em inglês:

say = the words, tell = the person;
speak = formal/ability, talk = chat/discuss.

2. Say: foco no que é dito

Usamos say quando nos importamos com o que alguém diz – a frase ou a mensagem em si.

Estruturas típicas

• say + words/content

  • She said nothing.
  • Don’t say that.

• say (that) + clause

  • He said (that) he was busy.
  • They say (that) it will rain.

• say to somebody (menos comum, normalmente na língua escrita)

Pontos-chave

• Com say, o objeto direto costuma ser a mensagem, não a pessoa.

• Normalmente não usamos say seguido diretamente de uma pessoa:

Use say quando o foco está na declaração em si: a frase, as palavras ou a ideia.

3. Tell: foco em quem ouve

tell é usado quando queremos enfatizar quem recebe a informação. Sua estrutura quase sempre inclui uma pessoa.

  • Please tell him the truth.

• tell somebody that + clause

  • She told me that she was leaving.
  • He told us that the meeting was canceled.

• tell somebody to do something

• tell the truth

• tell a story / tell a joke

  • Grandpa is telling the children a story.

Erro comum

• Wrong: She told that she was tired.
• Correct: She said that she was tired.
• Correct: She told me that she was tired.

Lembre-se: tell quase sempre precisa de uma pessoa depois.

4. Speak: mais formal, língua e discurso

speak é usado em contextos mais formais, principalmente para:

1. falar sobre a capacidade de usar um idioma
2. falar sobre discursos ou falas formais

1) Capacidade linguística

• Do you speak English?
• She speaks three languages.
• He doesn’t speak German very well.

Nesse sentido, geralmente não usamos talk:

• Natural: He can speak French.
• Not natural: He can talk French.

2) Discurso / fala formal

• The president will speak on TV tonight.
• She will speak at the conference.
• He spoke about climate change in his speech.

• speak about/on + topic
  • He spoke about his experience.
  • She spoke on education reform.

3) speak to/with somebody

• I need to speak to you.
• Can I speak with the manager, please?

speak to/with é semelhante a talk to/with, mas costuma soar mais formal ou sério.

5. Talk: conversa e troca informal

talk é mais informal e costuma ser usado para conversas, discussões e troca de ideias entre duas ou mais pessoas.

Usos básicos

• We talked for hours.
• They are talking on the phone.

Padrões comuns

• talk to/with somebody

  • I like talking to my friends.
  • Can I talk with you for a minute?

• talk about + topic

  • Let’s talk about your plan.
  • We talked about the movie yesterday.

Expressões frequentes com talk

• talk business

  • Let’s sit down and talk business.

• talk nonsense

  • Stop talking nonsense.

• talk sense

  • Now you’re talking sense.

• small talk (bate-papo leve)

  • I’m not very good at small talk.

Pense em talk quando imaginar pessoas sentadas juntas, conversando, trocando ideias ou discutindo um assunto.

6. Comparando em pares

a) Say vs. Tell

• say = foca em as palavras
• tell = foca em a pessoa + a informação

Compare:

• She said (that) she was tired.

  • A mensagem é o que importa; não sabemos para quem ela disse.

• She told me (that) she was tired.

  • Sabemos exatamente para quem ela disse: me.

Mais correções:

• Wrong: He said me the truth.

  • Correct: He told me the truth.

• Wrong: She told that she would come.

  • Correct: She said that she would come.
  • Or: She told me that she would come.

Regra prática:

• Se você quer colocar diretamente uma pessoa depois do verbo, use tell.
• Se você quer colocar uma oração ou palavras entre aspas, use say.

b) Speak vs. Talk

• speak = mais formal, usado para idiomas e falas oficiais
• talk = mais informal, usado para conversas e discussões
