Say, Tell, Speak ve Talk Arasındaki Fark

Birçok İngilizce öğrenen için say, tell, speak ve talk fiilleri kafa karıştırıcıdır. Hepsi “konuşmak” ile ilgili olsa da, İngilizcede aynı şekilde kullanılmazlar. Bu yazıda her bir fiili tek tek ele alıp, tipik cümle kalıplarını ve sık yapılan hataları inceleyeceğiz.

1. Hızlı genel bakış

Önce her fiilin temel fikrini kısaca görelim:

• say: söylenen sözlere / içeriğe odaklanır
• tell: kime ne söylendiğine odaklanır
• speak: daha resmîdir; genellikle diller ve resmî konuşmalar için kullanılır
• talk: daha gündeliktir; sohbet ve tartışma için kullanılır

İngilizce bir hafıza cümlesi:

say = the words, tell = the person;
speak = formal/ability, talk = chat/discuss.

2. Say: “Ne söylendi?”

say fiili, ne söylendiğini — yani cümlenin veya mesajın kendisini — vurgulamak istediğimizde kullanılır.

Yaygın kalıplar

• say + words/content

  • She said nothing.
  • Don’t say that.

• say (that) + clause

  • He said (that) he was busy.
  • They say (that) it will rain.

• say to somebody (daha az yaygın, daha çok yazı dilinde)

  • She said to me, “Good luck.”

Önemli noktalar

• say ile doğrudan nesne genellikle sözlerin kendisi / mesaj olur, kişi değil.

• say fiilinden hemen sonra kişiyi getirmek çoğu durumda yanlış olur:

  • Wrong: He said me the truth.
  • Correct: He told me the truth.
  • Correct: He said (that) he was telling the truth.

Kimin duyduğundan çok, ne söylendiğini anlatmak istiyorsanız say kullanmak daha uygundur.

3. Tell: “Kime ne söylendi?”

tell fiili, kime bilgi verildiğini vurgulamak istediğimizde kullanılır. Yapısında neredeyse her zaman bir kişi bulunur.

Yaygın kalıplar

• tell + somebody + something

  • She told me the news.
  • Please tell him the truth.

• tell somebody that + clause

  • She told me that she was leaving.
  • He told us that the meeting was canceled.

• tell somebody to do something

  • My boss told me to finish it today.
  • I told you not to touch it.

tell ile sık kullanılan kalıplar

• tell the truth

  • To tell the truth, I don’t like it.

• tell a story / tell a joke

  • Grandpa is telling the children a story.
  • He loves telling jokes.

• tell the difference

  • Can you tell the difference between these two photos?

• tell right from wrong

  • Children should learn to tell right from wrong.

Sık yapılan hata

• Wrong: She told that she was tired.
• Correct: She said that she was tired.
• Correct: She told me that she was tired.

Unutmayın: tell fiilinden sonra neredeyse her zaman bir kişi gelir.

4. Speak: daha resmî, dil ve konuşma

speak genellikle daha resmî bağlamlarda kullanılır, özellikle:

1. bir dili konuşabilme becerisinden bahsederken
2. resmî konuşmalar veya hitaplardan bahsederken

1) Dil becerisi

• Do you speak English?
• She speaks three languages.
• He doesn’t speak German very well.

Bu anlamda genellikle talk kullanılmaz:

• Natural: He can speak French.
• Not natural: He can talk French.

2) Resmî konuşma / hitap

• The president will speak on TV tonight.
• She will speak at the conference.
• He spoke about climate change in his speech.

Sık görülen yapılar:

• speak about/on + topic
  • He spoke about his experience.
  • She spoke on education reform.

3) speak to/with somebody

• I need to speak to you.
• Can I speak with the manager, please?

speak to/with yapısı talk to/with ile benzerdir; ancak daha resmî veya ciddi tınlar.

5. Talk: gündelik sohbet ve tartışma

talk daha gündelik ve konuşma diline yakın bir fiildir; sohbet, fikir alışverişi ve tartışma gibi iki taraflı iletişimi ifade eder.

Temel kullanımlar

• We talked for hours.
• They are talking on the phone.

Yaygın yapılar

• talk to/with somebody

  • I like talking to my friends.
  • Can I talk with you for a minute?

• talk about + topic

  • Let’s talk about your plan.
  • We talked about the movie yesterday.

talk içeren yaygın ifadeler

• talk business

  • Let’s sit down and talk business.

• talk nonsense

  • Stop talking nonsense.

• talk sense

  • Now you’re talking sense.

• small talk (hafif, kısa sohbet)

  • I’m not very good at small talk.

Birden fazla kişinin karşılıklı konuşup fikir paylaştığı, rahatça sohbet ettiği durumları düşünüyorsanız, çoğu zaman talk doğru tercihtir.

6. Çiftler hâlinde karşılaştırma

a) Say vs. Tell

• say = sözlere / içeriğe odaklanır
• tell = kişiye + bilgiye odaklanır

Karşılaştıralım:

• She said (that) she was tired.

  • Önemli olan “yorgunum dedi” bilgisidir; kime söylediğimiz belirsizdir.

• She told me (that) she was tired.

  • Kime söylediği açıktır: me.

Başka düzeltme örnekleri:

• Wrong: He said me the truth.

  • Correct: He told me the truth.

• Wrong: She told that she would come.

  • Correct: She said that she would come.
  • Or: She told me that she would come.

Pratik kural:

• Fiilden hemen sonra kişi getirmek istiyorsanız tell kullanın.
• Sonrasında cümle ya da tırnak içi sözler getirmek istiyorsanız say kullanın.

b) Speak vs. Talk

• speak = daha resmî; diller ve resmî konuşmalar için
• talk = daha gündelik; sohbet ve tartışma için

Karşılaştıralım:

• He can speak French.

  • Dil becerisinden bahsediyor.

• The manager will speak at the meeting.

  • Toplantıda resmî bir konuşma yapacağından bahsediyor.

• We talked about the meeting yesterday.

  • Dün toplantı hakkında gayriresmî bir sohbet ettiğimizden bahsediyor.

• I need to speak to you.

  • Daha ciddi / resmî bir tonda.

• Can we talk?

  • Daha kişisel ve gündelik: “Biraz konuşabilir miyiz?”

7. Özet

Dört fiili zihninizde şöyle sınıflandırabilirsiniz:

• say

  • Odak: sözler / mesaj
  • Kalıplar: say (that) + clause, say + something

• tell

  • Odak: bilgiyi alan kişi
  • Kalıplar: tell + somebody + something, tell somebody that + clause, tell somebody to do something

• speak

  • Odak: dil becerisi, resmî konuşma
  • Kalıplar: speak English, speak at a conference, speak about/on + topic, speak to/with somebody

• talk

  • Odak: gündelik sohbet, tartışma
  • Kalıplar: talk to/with somebody, talk about + topic
