ההבדל בין Say, Tell, Speak ו‑Talk

לרבים מלומדי האנגלית קשה להבחין בין הפעלים say, tell, speak ו‑talk. כולם קשורים ל“דיבור”, אבל משתמשים בהם בהקשרים שונים. המדריך הזה עובר פועל‑פועל, מציג מבני משפט טיפוסיים ומאיר את הטעויות הנפוצות ביותר.

1. מבט מהיר

כך אפשר לזכור בקצרה את הרעיון המרכזי של כל פועל:

• say: מתמקד ב‑מה נאמר – המילים עצמן
• tell: מתמקד ב‑למי מוסרים את המידע
• speak: רשמי יותר, משמש לעיתים קרובות לגבי שפות ו‑נאומים רשמיים
• talk: מדובר יותר, משמש ל‑שיחה ודיון

תזכורת קצרה באנגלית:

say = the words, tell = the person;
speak = formal/ability, talk = chat/discuss.

2. Say: דגש על מה שנאמר

משתמשים ב‑say כשחשוב לנו מה מישהו אמר – המשפט או המסר עצמו.

מבנים טיפוסיים

• say + words/content

  • She said nothing.
  • Don’t say that.

• say (that) + clause

  • He said (that) he was busy.
  • They say (that) it will rain.

• say to somebody (פחות נפוץ, בעיקר בכתיבה)

  • She said to me, “Good luck.”

נקודות מפתח

• עם say המושא הישיר הוא בדרך כלל התוכן, לא האדם.

• בדרך כלל לא שמים אחרי say אדם ישירות:

  • Wrong: He said me the truth.
  • Correct: He told me the truth.
  • Correct: He said (that) he was telling the truth.

העדיפו say כאשר המוקד הוא על המשפט או הרעיון שנאמר.

3. Tell: דגש על מי שמקבל את המסר

ב‑tell אנחנו מדגישים למי נאמרת האינפורמציה. המבנה כמעט תמיד כולל אדם.

• tell + somebody + something

  • She told me the news.
  • Please tell him the truth.

• tell somebody that + clause

  • She told me that she was leaving.
  • He told us that the meeting was canceled.

• tell somebody to do something

  • My boss told me to finish it today.
  • I told you not to touch it.

צירופים נפוצים עם tell

• tell the truth

  • To tell the truth, I don’t like it.

• tell a story / tell a joke

  • Grandpa is telling the children a story.
  • He loves telling jokes.

• tell the difference

  • Can you tell the difference between these two photos?

• tell right from wrong

  • Children should learn to tell right from wrong.

טעות נפוצה

• Wrong: She told that she was tired.
• Correct: She said that she was tired.
• Correct: She told me that she was tired.

זכרו: אחרי tell מופיע כמעט תמיד אדם.

4. Speak: רשמי יותר, על שפה ונאומים

speak מופיע בדרך‑כלל בהקשרים רשמיים יותר, במיוחד כאשר:

1. מדברים על היכולת להשתמש בשפה מסוימת
2. מדברים על נאומים או דברי פתיחה רשמיים

1) יכולת לשונית

• Do you speak English?
• She speaks three languages.
• He doesn’t speak German very well.

במשמעות הזו כמעט לא נשתמש ב‑talk:

• Natural: He can speak French.
• Not natural: He can talk French.

2) נאום / דיבור רשמי

• The president will speak on TV tonight.
• She will speak at the conference.
• He spoke about climate change in his speech.

מבנים נפוצים:

• speak about/on + topic
  • He spoke about his experience.
  • She spoke on education reform.

3) speak to/with somebody

• I need to speak to you.
• Can I speak with the manager, please?

speak to/with דומה ל‑talk to/with, אבל לרוב נשמע רשמי או רציני יותר.

5. Talk: שיחה יומיומית ודיון

talk הוא פועל יומיומי יותר ומשתמשים בו לרוב כדי לתאר שיחה, דיון והחלפת דעות.

שימושים בסיסיים

• We talked for hours.
• They are talking on the phone.

מבנים נפוצים

• talk to/with somebody

  • I like talking to my friends.
  • Can I talk with you for a minute?

• talk about + topic

  • Let’s talk about your plan.
  • We talked about the movie yesterday.

צירופים נפוצים עם talk

• talk business

  • Let’s sit down and talk business.

• talk nonsense

  • Stop talking nonsense.

• talk sense

  • Now you’re talking sense.

• small talk (שיחת חולין קצרה)

  • I’m not very good at small talk.

חשבו על talk כשאתם מדמיינים כמה אנשים יושבים יחד, משוחחים, מחליפים רעיונות או דנים בנושא מסוים.

6. השוואה בזוגות

a) Say מול Tell

• say = הדגש על המילים
• tell = הדגש על האדם + המידע

השוואה:

• She said (that) she was tired.

  • המסר עצמו חשוב; לא נאמר למי היא אמרה זאת.

• She told me (that) she was tired.

  • ברור למי היא אמרה זאת: me.

עוד תיקונים:

• Wrong: He said me the truth.

  • Correct: He told me the truth.

• Wrong: She told that she would come.

  • Correct: She said that she would come.
  • Or: She told me that she would come.

כלל עזר:

• אם מיד אחרי הפועל מופיע אדם, השתמשו ב‑tell.
• אם אחריו מגיעה פסוקית או ציטוט, השתמשו ב‑say.

b) Speak מול Talk

• speak = רשמי יותר, משמש לגבי שפות ו‑נאומים רשמיים
• talk = יומיומי יותר, משמש ל‑שיחה ודיון

השוואה:

• He can speak French.

  • מדבר על היכולת הלשונית שלו.

• The manager will speak at the meeting.

  • מדבר על נאום רשמי בישיבה.

• We talked about the meeting yesterday.

  • מדבר על שיחה לא רשמית על הישיבה.

• I need to speak to you.

  • נשמע רציני או רשמי יותר.

• Can we talk?

  • נשמע אישי ולא רשמי: “נוכל לדבר?”.

7. סיכום

אפשר לסכם את ארבעת הפעלים כך:

• say

  • מיקוד: המילים / המסר
  • דפוסים: say (that) + clause, say + something

• tell

  • מיקוד: מי מקבל את המידע
  • דפוסים: tell + somebody + something, tell somebody that + clause, tell somebody to do something

• speak

  • מיקוד: יכולת לשונית, נאום רשמי
  • דפוסים: speak English, speak at a conference, speak about/on + topic, speak to/with somebody

• talk

  • מיקוד: שיחה יומיומית, דיון
  • דפוסים: talk to/with somebody, talk about + topic
