Say・Tell・Speak・Talk の違いをわかりやすく解説

英語学習者がよく混乱する動詞が say・tell・speak・talk です。どれも「話す」系の意味ですが、使われ方は大きく違います。この記事ではそれぞれの動詞を順番に見ながら、典型的な文型とよくある間違いを整理していきます。

1. まずはざっくり全体像

それぞれのコアイメージは次のように覚えられます。

• say: 言った内容そのもの にフォーカス
• tell: 誰に（誰へ）情報を伝えるか にフォーカス
• speak: より フォーマル、言語能力 や 公式なスピーチ によく使う
• talk: より カジュアル、会話 や ディスカッション に使う

say = the words, tell = the person;
speak = formal/ability, talk = chat/discuss.

2. Say: 「何と言ったか」に注目

say は、話し手が 何を言ったか、セリフやメッセージそのものを説明するときに使います。

代表的な文型

• say + words/content

  • She said nothing.
  • Don’t say that.

• say (that) + clause

  • He said (that) he was busy.
  • They say (that) it will rain.

• say to somebody（あまり多くない／書き言葉寄り）

  • She said to me, “Good luck.”

ポイント

• say の直後に来るのはふつう 人ではなく、内容（メッセージ）。

• 人を直接続けるのはNG になることが多いです：

  • Wrong: He said me the truth.
  • Correct: He told me the truth.

「誰に言ったか」よりも、「何と言ったか」を言いたいときに say を使います。

3. Tell: 「誰に何を伝えるか」に注目

tell は、誰に 情報を伝えるのかを強調したいときに使います。文型の中にほぼ必ず 人（目的語） が入ります。

• tell somebody that + clause

  • She told me that she was leaving.

ありがちなミス

• Wrong: She told that she was tired.
• Correct: She said that she was tired.
• Correct: She told me that she was tired.

tell はほとんど必ず 人（me / you / him / her など） を伴う、と覚えておくと迷いにくくなります。

4. Speak: フォーマル・言語・スピーチ

speak は、ややフォーマルな場面や、言語能力・スピーチについて話すときによく使われます。

1）言語能力を表す

• Do you speak English?
• She speaks three languages.
• He doesn’t speak German very well.

この意味ではふつう talk は使いません：

• Natural: He can speak French.
• Not natural: He can talk French.

2）フォーマルなスピーチや発言

• The president will speak on TV tonight.
• She will speak at the conference.
• He spoke about climate change in his speech.

よくあるパターン：

• speak about/on + topic
  • He spoke about his experience.
  • She spoke on education reform.

3）speak to/with somebody

• I need to speak to you.
• Can I speak with the manager, please?

speak to/with は talk to/with と似ていますが、ややフォーマル・深刻な響きがあります。

5. Talk: カジュアルな会話・やりとり

talk はよりカジュアルで、ふつうの会話やディスカッションなど「やりとり」がある場面でよく使われます。

基本的な使い方

• We talked for hours.
• They are talking on the phone.

よく出る文型

• talk to/with somebody

  • I like talking to my friends.
  • Can I talk with you for a minute?

• talk about + topic

  • Let’s talk about your plan.
  • We talked about the movie yesterday.

talk を使った表現

• talk business

  • Let’s sit down and talk business.

• talk nonsense

  • Stop talking nonsense.

• talk sense

何人かが座って気楽に話したり、意見を交換したり、テーマについて話し合っているイメージなら、たいてい talk がしっくりきます。

a) Say vs. Tell

• say = 言葉そのもの にフォーカス
• tell = 相手 + 伝える情報 にフォーカス

比べてみましょう：

• She said (that) she was tired.

  • 何と言ったか（内容）がポイントで、誰に言ったかは不明。

• She told me (that) she was tired.

  • 「誰に」言ったかがハッキリしている：me.

ほかの訂正例：

• Wrong: He said me the truth.

  • Correct: He told me the truth.

• Wrong: She told that she would come.

  • Correct: She said that she would come.
  • Or: She told me that she would come.

実用的な覚え方：

• 動詞のすぐ後ろに 人 を置きたいなら tell。
• その後ろに 文や「〜と」言った内容 を置きたいなら say。

b) Speak vs. Talk

• speak = よりフォーマル、言語 と 公式な発言 によく使う
• talk = よりカジュアル、会話 や ディスカッション に使う

比べてみましょう：

• He can speak French.

  • 言語能力について話している。

• The manager will speak at the meeting.

  • 会議での公式なスピーチのイメージ。

• We talked about the meeting yesterday.

  • 昨日その会議について雑談・話し合いをしたイメージ。

• I need to speak to you.

  • やや深刻・フォーマルな響き。

• Can we talk?

  • 個人的・カジュアルな「ちょっと話せる？」というニュアンス。
