How to Translate a PDF on Your Phone in 3 Steps (Keep the Layout)
TABLE OF CONTENTS
You received a PDF in another language and you only have your phone. This guide translates the whole file in your mobile browser in three steps, with the layout kept intact.
What You Need
- Your phone (iPhone or Android) with a browser such as Safari or Chrome.
- The PDF file saved in Files, Downloads, Google Drive, or as an email attachment.
- Internet connection. No app install is required for the steps below (free preview available). On iPhone, you can also use the free Doc Translator app (iOS 18.0 or later) instead of the browser.
3 Steps to Translate the PDF
- Upload your PDF. Open OpenL Doc Translator (free) in Safari or Chrome, tap the upload area labeled “Click or drop file here”, and choose the PDF from Files, Downloads, Drive, or your email attachment (up to 80 MB).
- Pick the target language. Choose from 100+ languages in the target-language list.
- Download the translated file. Check the free preview first to confirm the layout survived, then download the translated PDF plus the bilingual version for review.
Prefer an App? (iPhone)
Get the free Doc Translator app. Download Doc Translator: PDF, EPUB, OCR from the App Store (free, iOS 18.0 or later). It covers the same job — PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, EPUB, and images into 100+ languages with layout preserved and OCR for scans — in four taps: upload a file, choose the target language, review the credit cost, then download. Your recent translations stay in the app.
1-Minute Check: Is Your PDF a Scan?
Try selecting one line of text with your finger in your PDF reader first.
- Text selects and highlights: it is a text PDF. Upload it directly.
- Only a rectangle or nothing selects: it is a scanned PDF (photos of pages). It needs OCR. OpenL’s built-in OCR handles clear, readable scans, but blurry or tilted photos translate worse — retake or straighten the photo first if you can.
This select-to-test trick is the standard check recommended across PDF guides: selectable text means a text layer exists, otherwise the page is an image.
Tips
- Use Wi-Fi for large files. Phone uploads on mobile data can stall; files up to 80 MB are accepted on the uploader page.
- Keep the original file. If the layout looks off after translation, you still have the source to retry with a cleaner scan.
- Check tables and numbers before sharing. Layout is preserved, but always skim names, dates, and figures in the bilingual copy before sending it on.
FAQ
Can I do this without installing an app?
Yes. The steps above run entirely in your mobile browser: open the page, upload, pick a language, download. No install needed. On iPhone, the free Doc Translator app is an alternative if you translate often.
Why not just use the Google Translate app?
The Google Translate mobile app covers typed text, camera, and conversation translation, but Google’s own help page states document translation “isn’t available on smaller screens or mobile”. For a full multi-page PDF with layout, a browser-based document translator or the iOS app above fits this task better.
Is it free?
OpenL offers a free preview of your translated document each day so you can check the layout before paying. Scanned-PDF quotas and file-size caps vary by plan, so check the pricing page if you translate scans often.
Will my formatting survive?
Tables, images, fonts, and page layout are designed to be retained, and you receive both a translated version and a bilingual version. Always review the output before sharing or submitting it.
What if my file is a blurry photo scan?
OCR reads what is there — it does not repair a bad scan. Straighten tilted pages, use good light, and keep the text horizontal. If accuracy matters (contracts, certificates), proofread the result or re-scan at higher quality.
